Takeout is convenient, but it adds up fast. After years of cooking for family across different countries, I’ve found that simple homemade Korean dishes are often just as satisfying—and much more economical—than restaurant meals.
These recipes mostly use everyday ingredients you likely already have on hand: eggs, tofu, kimchi, ground meat, and a few staples like soy sauce and sesame oil. Ingredients
1 tbsp oil
1/2 onion (about 75 g), minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb (450 g) ground beef (preferably 90% lean)
2 green onions, finely chopped (optional)
For bulgogi sauce
4 tbsp (60 ml) soy sauce
2–3 tbsp (25–40 g) brown sugar
2 tbsp (30 ml) sweet rice wine (mirim) or substitute with a splash of cooking wine
1 tbsp (15 ml) sesame oil
1 tsp (2 g) ground pepper
1 tbsp (9 g) toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
Combine all bulgogi sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
Heat the oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the onion and garlic for 1–2 minutes until soft.
Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and fully cooked.
Pour the sauce over the beef and stir to coat. Let the mixture simmer until heated through and the sauce thickens slightly, about 2 minutes.
Garnish with chopped green onion and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately over steamed rice.
