Refreshing Watermelon Lemonade and Homemade Popsicles

On a hot, steamy summer day, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade. Take a few extra minutes and elevate it by making Watermelon Lemonade—bright, naturally sweet, and incredibly thirst-quenching. I love watermelon in every form, and this version delivers genuine flavor without any artificial taste.

A Watermelon and Some Lemons

Two of the season’s freshest ingredients—watermelon and lemons—combine with a little sugar to make a simple, memorable drink. This recipe is quick and uses just a handful of ingredients, so it’s perfect for keeping a pitcher in the fridge all summer long. If you need help prepping a whole watermelon, see my guide on how to cut a watermelon like a pro for tips on doing it quickly and safely.

For this Watermelon Lemonade you’ll need about half of a large watermelon (or one whole personal watermelon), 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. That’s it—short ingredient lists are my favorite because they let the produce shine and usually yield the best results.

Homemade Watermelon Lemonade

After breaking down the watermelon, puree about half of it in a high-speed blender or use an immersion blender in a large pitcher. Blend or pulse until fully liquified. Strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl or pitcher, pressing on the solids to extract as much juice as possible. You should end up with roughly 6 cups of fresh watermelon juice.

Return the strained watermelon juice to the blender with the lemon juice and sugar. Blend on low for 60–90 seconds, just until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. If you’ll serve the lemonade soon, chill it in the fridge. Chilling helps prevent separation; if the juice separates while sitting, give it a quick stir or pulse in the blender before serving.

Serve over ice with lemon slices or small watermelon wedges for garnish. The bright color and natural sweetness make it a crowd-pleaser for picnics, barbecues, and pool days.

Turning It Into Popsicles

This lemonade also freezes beautifully into popsicles. For best results, chill the lemonade thoroughly and stir well before pouring into molds. Cold mixture freezes faster and reduces separation, giving you a more uniform, attractive popsicle. Pour into your favorite molds, insert sticks, and freeze until solid.

If you don’t have popsicle molds, consider using a large ice cube tray or small paper cups with wooden sticks; the result makes a fun, summery treat. For an adult version, drop a popsicle into a glass with a splash of vodka or whiskey to make a slushy cocktail while it melts.

My Favorite Kitchen Tools

Over the years I’ve collected a few kitchen tools I reach for again and again. A good set of silicone tongs, reliable sheet pans, a dependable pressure cooker or multi-cooker, a sharp chef’s knife, and a durable nonstick skillet make everyday cooking easier and more enjoyable.

Other small essentials: a flexible silicone scraper, a sturdy wooden spoon, and a kitchen scale for recipes that benefit from precise measurements. Investing in quality basics will pay off in speed, comfort, and consistent results in the kitchen.
