With school starting soon, mornings can be hectic — breakfasts before the bus, packed lunches, and after-school snacks. Turning a simple sandwich into something playful makes the routine more memorable. I created these “Morning Monsters” open-face sandwiches with my daughter and wanted to share how easy and fun they are. Below you’ll find ideas, ingredients, and tips to inspire your own sandwich art.

These sandwich faces are quick to assemble and a great way to involve kids in the kitchen. Whether you toast Nature’s Harvest® Honey Wheat or Whole Wheat bread or leave it soft, the bread becomes the perfect canvas for playful, nutritious creations. The activity encourages creativity and helps add fruit and protein to a familiar snack.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Nature’s Harvest® Honey Wheat or Whole Wheat bread
  • Peanut butter
  • Hazelnut spread
  • Strawberry cream cheese spread
  • Bananas, strawberries, raspberries
  • Almonds (slivered and whole)
  • Raisins
  • Vanilla wafer cookies
  • Chocolate chips

Start by spreading your chosen base — peanut butter, hazelnut spread, or strawberry cream cheese — on a slice of bread. For a bright, fruity monster, try Nature’s Harvest® Honey Wheat topped with strawberry cream cheese, sliced strawberries, raisins, and a few chocolate chips for eyes. Add an almond for a playful nose.

Cut a mouth shape from the bread for different expressions — happy, surprised, or even a little scary. One of our favorites used Nature’s Harvest® Honey Wheat with hazelnut spread, slivered almonds for texture, a strawberry slice for a bright cheek, a vanilla wafer for an eye, a banana slice, and a raisin to finish the look.

Prep the small components — slice the fruit, arrange almonds, and line up chocolate chips — then let your child design the face. Encourage them to layer ingredients for expressive eyes, add eyebrows, and experiment with different textures. One of our “scary” monsters used Nature’s Harvest® Whole Wheat with peanut butter, banana slices, raisins, slivered almonds, and a raspberry.

This activity is a practical way to add protein and fruit to your child’s snack while making breakfasts and lunch packing part of a creative moment. My six-year-old asks to make these now — it’s an easy win for mornings and after-school treats.

We’ve offered whole grain bread in our home for years, and our daughter enjoyed both the whole wheat and honey wheat varieties. Nature’s Harvest® breads are baked with a focus on whole grains and avoid artificial flavors and high fructose corn syrup.

Each Nature’s Harvest® variety offers whole grain per serving and comes in multiple options to suit family preferences. The loaves we find in stores include stone ground whole wheat, honey wheat made with whole grain, and butter-top styles in white and wheat.

All four varieties we tried were available at our neighborhood Target, and we would buy them again. If you want to try a simple, playful way to brighten mornings, give sandwich art a try — it’s fast, nutritious, and a great way to get kids involved in making their own food.

Nature’s Harvest® bread is available nationwide in several varieties including:

  • 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat Bread
