Tell us a little about your weight struggle
After pregnancy I struggled to lose a large amount of weight. That initial weight gain was compounded by emotional eating following the deaths of my parents. During a major family transition—moving and joining a conservative community in a different region—I turned even more to food for comfort and continued to gain weight.
What was your wake-up call or “a-ha” moment that led you to make a change?
The moment that changed everything came during a holiday meal with my husband and five children. I couldn’t fit into the armless chair at the table. Being laughed at by staff and stared at by other diners was humiliating. I cried through most of the meal and felt ashamed for putting my family in that position. That humiliation became my breaking point—I realized I was literally burying myself with my own fork and needed to stop. I didn’t want to miss watching my children grow up, so I committed to change.
How did your eating habits change after you started your journey?
Before, I ate mindlessly—reaching for whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, often driven by emotion rather than hunger. Once I started, one of the most powerful tools was keeping a food journal. Tracking what I ate helped me understand not only what was on my plate but why I was eating and how to make better choices the next day. Paying attention to portions and the reasons behind eating helped me break emotional eating patterns.
My diet shifted from processed, high-carb, sugary comfort foods to foods focused around the outer aisles of the grocery store: vegetables, fruit, lean proteins, whole grains, and lighter dairy options. Eliminating processed foods allowed me to build satisfying meals that supported steady weight loss. I also revamped my beverages—replacing calorie-filled drinks with water and zero-calorie options and making hydration a priority. I aimed to drink at least half my body weight in ounces each day. Proper hydration helped reduce false hunger, support detoxification, and improve skin and energy levels.

How did your fitness and activity change?
At 410 pounds, even basic movement was painful. As the weight came off, movement became easier and more enjoyable. Every pound lost reduced the load on my joints, which made daily life feel lighter. I never became a gym regular—my approach was practical and doable: take the stairs, park farther from the store, walk more, and ride a bike when possible. Small increases in everyday activity added up and helped maintain weight loss while improving stamina and mood.
What has been the biggest payoff for you so far?
Losing 275 pounds transformed my life. The greatest change isn’t the number on the scale but the life I now live. I went from watching life from the sidelines to fully participating in it. Everyday activities that were once impossible became joyful again. The emotional freedom and increased quality of life are the true rewards.
How much weight did you lose and how long did it take?
I lost a total of 275 pounds, going from 410 to 135. The first 100 pounds came off in the first seven months; the remaining 175 pounds were lost over the next two-plus years.
Advice for others who are struggling
Losing weight is hard, but living with severe obesity is far harder. You will face temptations and want to give up, but persistence pays off. Acknowledge that it’s a difficult process, find small, sustainable changes, keep tracking your food and habits, stay hydrated, be more active in daily life, and seek support. If I can do this, you can too.
